About

This course is designed specifically for junior English students to build upon an existing foundation of reading, writing, and communicating ability with the further goal of preparing students for end of course literacy examinations, college, and their career of choice.

The focus of this course will be on improving students’ reading comprehension of various types of text, with the focus being on the history of American Literature. We will study American literature using a chronological approach. Aside from short stories, poetry, essays, and other nonfiction, we will read at least four novels as a class, including:
The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass
Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Class Policies and Procedures for English 3

English Fee is $5.00.  This needs to be paid as soon as possible.
Debt lists will be updated frequently.

Supplies Needed:
Pens (BLUE OR BLACK ONLY)
Loose-leaf paper
3-ring (1” or larger) hard-back binder.
Dividers (5)

Course information and syllabus should be kept at the front of the binder. I do not mind if you have another class in the same binder as long as all work is kept separate (and I would prefer for my class to be at the front).  You need to have dividers for the binder.  Sections will include (in this order):

Vocabulary
Independent Reading
Literature Notes
Classwork
Essays

                  Classroom Procedures

1.) Bell Work: When you enter the room, check the agenda for your class on the board. There will almost always be daily vocabulary work, sentence corrections and/or independent reading for you to work on.  You are expected to be following those directions when the bell has finished its ring.

2.) Tardy Policy: You must be in the classroom when the tardy bell begins to ring. If you have to leave class to get an item from your locker, car or another class, you will receive a tardy. Never stay late in another class thinking I will automatically excuse it.

3.) Dress Code: Do NOT enter this class unless your clothing complies with the school dress code. I will ask you to fix the problem (if possible) or send you directly to the office. You and I are both too old to have discussions about appropriate dress,

4.) Cell Phones: This class complies with the MHS cell phone policy. I will not seek out your phone, but I am required to confiscate it if I see/hear it.  Please keep your phone put away.

5.) Respect for Property: You have permission to use the tissue paper, dictionaries, and encyclopedias. All other items in this classroom are off limits unless you have been given specific permission. Throw away any trash at the end of class only.  Note to all—This is a biggie for me!

7.) Bathroom: Use the restroom and get a drink between classes.

8.) Heading Papers: At the top right of your margin, please write your first and last name, the class period, and the date. Failure to do so will result in a deduction of points from the assignment. (Another biggie!)

9.) Ink: Every assignment must be written in BLUE or BLACK. Failure to use dark ink may result in your having to do the assignment over and/or a deduction of points from the assignment.  Pencil may be used for rough drafts only.

10.) Interruptions During Class: From time to time, class may be interrupted by announcements or by someone coming to the door. If this should happen, please remain quiet, in your seat, and working. This behavior is expected and appreciated.

11.) Substitute Teachers: On the rare occasions when you have a substitute, please follow his or her directions. All work given by a substitute will be graded. Any misbehavior while a substitute is present will be punished. I do not tolerate disrespectful behavior towards anyone,  substitute teachers included. (Another biggie!)

12. Dismissal from Class: Please remain in your seat until I dismiss you. Do not line up at the door or rush out of the room at the sound of the bell. The bell does not dismiss you. I dismiss you.

13.) Sleeping in Class:  is never an option.  Neither is laying your head down.  There is always something to do that is more constructive than napping.  You will get one request to comply.

Absences, Late Work and Make-up Work/Tests

1.     It is the responsibility of the student to get any missed notes from another student. Missed handouts will be provided, and in most cases, will be posted on the website. The edu20.com  site for this class, as well as mrcrooksclass.com,  will be updated regularly and will contain most needed information.

2.      Homework turned in at any time after I collect the assignment is considered late and is worth half credit. I will not accept homework that is more than one day late.

3.      All make-up work must be completed in a timely matter:

        a.      If student does miss class, he or she has one day for every day absent to complete make-up work. Work not made up and turned in during this time frame will be counted as a zero.

        b.      If a student is in class on the day that a test or assignment is announced but is absent on the due date, he/she will be expected to turn in the work or take the test on the date that he/she returns to class. If the work is not turned in or the test not taken, he/she will receive a zero score.

I will be available before or after school almost every day for help, questions, or advice.  Do not come right before the first bell rings because I will not have time to talk to you.  If you need a longer conference time, just let me know and we will schedule something.  If you need help, ASK.  I will do my best.

Grading Policy:

Independent Reading:  ---------------30%
Tests/Essays: ---------------------------30%
Classwork/Homework/Quizzes -----30%
